Tips For Melting The Candy Melts Properly

Melting candy melts is a process that requires patience and attention. By following these tips, you’ll get smooth, melted candy melts that are perfect for coating or drizzling over your Christmas cake ball truffles or anything else.

Use a microwave: Candy melts can be melted using either a microwave or a double boiler. In the microwave, melt them in short intervals of 15-30 seconds, stir in between.

Use A Double Boiler: fill the pot with water and heat on low. Put the candy melts in the top pot and stir until melted.

Use Low heat: Regardless of the method you choose, melt them on low to prevent burning. Add a tbsp or two of shortening also.

Avoid moisture: Keep the melting process free from any moisture, even a small amount can cause the candy melts to seize or become lumpy. Make sure your utensils, bowls, and containers are completely dry before adding the candy melts.

Coating The Cake Balls: Tips & Tricks

Remember, practice makes perfect! If you’re just starting out, don’t feel bad if the first batch doesn’t turn out great.

Prepare the cake balls: Before dipping, ensure that the cake balls are chilled and firm. This makes them easier to handle and prevents them from falling apart in the melted candy.

Work in small batches: Do a few at a time, and keep the rest in the fridge. This keeps them firm and prevents them from getting too soft while you’re dipping.

Holiday desserts

Use a fork or dipping tools: Using a fork or specialized dipping tools can make the process easier. Gently insert the fork or tool into the cake ball, and use it to lift and lower the ball into the melted candy melts. Tap the fork or tool on the side of the bowl to remove excess coating, allowing it to drip back into the bowl.

Ingredients

  • 1 prepared red velvet cake homemade or store-bought
  • 1 cup cream cheese frosting
  • 1 package white candy melts
  • Green candy melts for drizzling
  • Sprinkles or decorations of your choice optional

Instructions

  • Bake the red velvet cake according to the package instructions or using your favorite recipe. Allow it to cool completely.
  • Crumble the cooled cake into a large bowl. Make sure there are no large chunks.
  • Add the cream cheese frosting to the crumbled cake. Mix well until the cake and frosting are thoroughly combined.
  • Using your hands or a small scoop, form small balls about 1-2 inches in diameter from the cake mixture. Place the balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Place the cake balls in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to firm up.
  • While the cake balls are chilling, melt the white candy melts according to the package instructions. You can use a microwave-safe bowl or a double boiler.
  • Remove the cake balls from the refrigerator. Dip each ball into the melted white candy melts, ensuring it is evenly coated. Use a fork or a toothpick to lift the cake ball out of the candy coating, allowing any excess to drip off.
  • Place the coated cake ball back onto the parchment-lined baking sheet. Repeat this process for all the cake balls.
  • Let the white candy coating set completely. You can speed up the process by placing the baking sheet in the refrigerator for about 10-15 minutes.
  • Once the white coating is set, melt the green candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl or using a double boiler.
  • Transfer the melted green candy melts into a small piping bag or a ziplock bag with a tiny hole cut in one corner.
  • Drizzle the green candy melt over the white-coated cake balls in a zigzag pattern or any design you prefer.
  • If desired, add sprinkles or decorations while the candy melts are still wet.
  • Allow the candy melts to set completely before serving. You can refrigerate the truffles for a short period to speed up the setting process.
  • Serve and enjoy your festive Christmas cake ball truffles!
  • These Christmas cake ball truffles are not only delicious but also make a beautiful and festive addition to any holiday dessert table.
