Turkey Cupcakes Tips & Hacks

  • If you have larger fingers or just not good at using your hands you can apply the eyeballs and M&Ms with something like tweezers – sprinkle tweezers
  • Only fill the cupcake liners up ⅓ the way through so there’s plenty of space inside the liners to decorate- this reduces the cooking time down by quite a few minutes (from 15-18 to 10-12) So be cautious not to over cook your easy Thanksgiving cupcakes with Turkey decorating idea!

Ingredients & Substitutions

  • box chocolate cake mix – chocolate is best for the base because the Turkey is brown although you could make his cake base any color you want. Or you can put brown food color in a vanilla cake mix if you’d like.
  • vegetable oil – you could replace this ingredient with equal parts melted butter or shortening
  • Eggs
  • Whole milk – you can replace this ingredient with any kind of milk or even water. However, whole milk creates the best taste and texture if you ask me.
  • Yellow frosting- I wanted a lighter color underneath the M&Ms to really make them pop but you could use any neutral Fall color like brown, red, etc.
  • Red frosting – it’s best to have at least enough red frosting to make the tongues/ gizzard – this detail really makes it look like a turkey.
  • Bite size Reese’s Pieces – you could use Rolos instead but it’s harder to fit the face on a Rolo.
  • M&Ms – orange, brown, and yellow.
  • Eyeball candies  – You can draw your own eyeballs with frosting or glaze.

  • Prepare the Batter: In a mixing bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, vegetable👀 oil, and eggs, and mix until combined
  • Then mix in the whole milk.
  • Use an electric mixer or a whisk to blend the ingredients together. Mix until the batter is smooth and well-combined.
  • Fill the Cupcake Liners: Use a small ice cream scoop, cup or a spoon to evenly distribute the cupcake batter into the cupcake liners.
  • Fill each liner about one-thirds full to leave room for the cupcakes to rise and the frosting and decorations.
  • Place the muffin tin in the preheated oven. Bake for 11 minutes.
  • Let them rest to room temperature then chill for 30 minutes
  • Use the yellow frosting to create a flat swirl of frosting on each cupcake
  • Place one Bite size Reese’s Pieces on top of the yellow frosting at the bottom to create a base for the face
  • Dap red frosting for the eyeballs to stick and a “tongue”
  • Place the eyeballs and one orange M&M next to the tongue for the beak
  • Make lines of M&Ms to represent the feathers in the rest of the frosting.
